Over the last three decades, managers have increased in number, and managerialism has become pervasive in many areas of society. Many more general managers have become CEOs. In this lunchtime briefing, Cass consultant Amanda Goodall, Senior Lecturer in Management, will discuss whether leaders should be specialists or generalists; whether it is enough to be good manager, or CEOs should have core business knowledge. Dr Amanda Goodall believes that the pendulum may have swung too far towards managers, and away from expert leaders. Her research suggests that leaders should first be experts in the core business of their organisations, whether they are bankers, hospital administrators, hi-tech innovators or restaurateurs. Amanda will present evidence from her research and invite participants to voice their opinions and views in an interactive discussion.
