Reimagining the Gothic (2018): Aesthetics and Archetypes

Presented a research paper entitled 'The Deep Dark: Hybridity as Human in the Gothic Weird Tale'. The abstract for this paper was as follows:

This paper explores how monstrous forces in the weird tale are presented as human-nature hybrids. The paper explores three texts: 'Dagon' by H. P. Lovecraft, The Man Whom the Trees Loved by Algernon Blackwood, and 'The Watcher' by R. H. Benson. The paper draws from this consideration that despite hybridity unsettling the anthropocentric, early weird tales often focus on expansions of human consciousness and affirmations of human constructs such as spirituality and religion. In 'Dagon', however, hybridity is represented as a direct challenge to the anthropocentric, resulting in human self-destruction. Employing deep ecological and dark ecological theory alongside primary source material, this paper contributes to contemporary ecoGothic development. This paper endeavours to establish a canon of hybridity and reframe the weird tale from the cosmic to the natural.
