Confident that imaginative literature could legitimately intervene in society, Italo Calvino positioned his book Invisible Cities (1979) to advance a rethinking and re-visioning of how cities are imagined, designed and built. Using Invisible Cities as an imaginary framework, this session sets out to explore the nature of the city through artistic and creative methods that think about urban forms in terms of imaginaries, narrations, representations and constructions. The session involves presentations of practice-led work from James and Cecilie, discussions and practical exercises, as well as an urban exploration of the invisible cities described by Calvino. Short excerpts from Invisible Cities will be circulated to participants at the beginning of November.
