Generative Constraints (External organisation)

Description

Generative Constraints is an interdisciplinary collective that seeks to interrogate the politics, poetics, and performativity of limitation and productivity. We are a group of six artists and researchers who started working together during our time as practice-based researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London. Our aims are to facilitate practice as a means of exploration and creative criticality. We are interested in exploring the ways in which the committee offers a stable and non-hierarchical structure for artistic exploration, and allows for different modes of interrogation that are informed by our particular politics and practices.

The Generative Constraints committee have worked on the following projects since forming in January 2013: we presented a live performance around the theme of ‘Aphorisms’ at the cross-genre series POLYply; we organised the conference ‘Generative Constraints’, which focussed on creative and critical issues surrounding interdisciplinarity and practice-based research; we hosted the event ‘About the Stand-Off’, which set up exchanges between academics, activists, and artists. We are currently working on a pedagogical project and series of performances entitled 'Anti-Body' (February 2015).

Prudence Chamberlain
- Prudence Chamberlain is a poet and academic investigating the intersections of feminism, flippancy and the contemporary.

Diana Damian Martin
- Diana Damian Martin is a critic and writer working with, through and about performance. She has worked with Spill Festival of Performance, The Live Art Development Agency, MPA-Berlin, performance space and The Barbican.

Kate Potts
- Kate Potts is a poet and creative writing lecturer who is exploring the potentials and constraints of poetic radio voice.

Nisha Ramayya
- Nisha Ramayya works with various critical and creative forms to investigate the possibilities of Tantric poetics as a mode of experimental feminist poetics.

Nik Wakefield
- Nik Wakefield is a performance maker and theorist whose work is focused on temporal aesthetics.

Eley Williams
- Eley Williams is a writer and lecturer, and has led creative writing and practice-based workshops and salons as part of arts festivals, residencies and literary events in London and Berlin.
