From Hidden Agenda to It’s a Free World: The Political Films of Ken Loach

Organised in association with BFI Southbank, this one-day event featured talks, screenings and panel discussions which explored the films of director Ken Loach (from the political thriller Hidden Agenda to more recent works of social realism such as It’s a Free World) and examined the status of political cinema more generally. Those involved included the journalist Paul Mason (author of Live Working or Die Fighting and Meltdown), Jonathan Murray (Edinburgh College of Art), Claire Monk (De Montfort University), Ian Christie (Birkbeck College, University of London), John Hill (Royal Holloway, University of London), the film directors Peter Kosminsky and Penny Woolcock, the writer Paul Laverty and the producer Rebecca O'Brien. Tony Garnett (the producer of Cathy Come Home and Kes) also spoke at the launch of Hill's book, Ken Loach: the Politics of Film and Television.
