The Enchantment of Ghosts: Ways of Seeing Havana (with Edmundo Desnoes)Memorias de un tiburón perdido is a series of black and white photographs and texts, which emerged from correspondence between the independent documentary photographer James Clifford Kent and the Cuban writer Edmundo Desnoes. This paper in question will explore this project and its subsequent exhibitions, in which the spectator is encouraged to enter a conversation with both photographer and writer in an act of imaginative solidarity with the actors taking centre stage in each of the images. Presented as a type of critical meta-text, this paper will draw upon research in Cuban studies and global visual cultures, whilst further exploring representations of a post-Special Period Cuba in the global imaginary. Using the American photographer Walker Evans’s images of Havana from 1933 as its point of departure, this paper will begin to investigate a new historical conjuncture that may be conducive to breaking the Revolution-fixated prism through which photography of Cuba has been seen throughout the twentieth- and early twenty-first-centuries.
