This paper is an exploration of the house image in the poem Nocturne by Carolyn Forche. The house in Nocturne (and the poem itself) become haunted by memory, ghosts, traces of selves and others. The reader enters the intimate space of the house only to find themselves dispossessed and questioning existence: “With the departed, a sense of time, and sleep is taken and the/world appears as if it were –” In this context, the paper will consider how Nocturne sets up a dialogue between the presence and absence – of the house, self, and the interplay between life and death. A reading of my poems is also performed.
