N2 - This article examines the relationship between Jodocus Lorichius, a Freiburg theology professor, and female monastic houses in South-West Germany in the second half of the sixteenth century. It looks at the books which Lorichius dedicated to certain nuns, highlighting Lorichius’s interest in the past, and how they were adapted to suit the needs of the present. It sheds new light on Lorichius’s character, on writing for women, and on the transmission, translation and adaptation of Latin and German medieval works.
