Abstract
Terrorism is a very old and very persistent problem. It emerges again and again simply because the circumstances which produce it continue to occur across time and geography. Usually terrorist violence is a symptom of other more fundamental problems. A good appreciation of the psychology of terrorists can open up genuine avenues for lasting peace. One can only hope that events like September 11 will encourage a wider appreciation of the knowledge that we currently have, rather than simply ingrain further the myths and innuendo which have dominated for so long.
