Abstract
This demonstrates how the Muslim world, which from its beginning had highly developed systems of connectivity, from the nineteenth century developed new layers of connection, in part through the development of transnational organisations, but in the main through the development of the print media and subsequently electronic media. All systems of connectivity, tranditional and modern, helped to transmit the ideas of reform, a 'protestant' this-worldly Islam. In the process the Muslim world began to change from a community of believers into a community of conscience.
