Abstract

Testing Times – A 30 minute immersive sound piece - Directed and Produced by Victoria Mapplebeck . Testing Times Received a 10K award from the IDFA R and D lab in 2021

Testing Times is an immersive audio experience which creates an unfiltered and unromanticized portrait of family life during a global pandemic. It features material from over 50 hours of phone calls and voicemails, I recorded with friends, family and doctors during multiple lockdowns. I collaborated with my then 17 year old son Jim, to capture our conflicting and contrasting experiences of life during a pandemic, living together in a small two bedroom London flat.

Testing Times was in competition at IDFA in Amsterdam in November 2021 and was also exhibited at the True/False Festival in the US in March 2022. In 2023 , Testing Times was selected for BFI Expanded’s Shifting Perspectives, an exhibition showcasing XR works written and directed by women and non binary creators . This exhibition was seen my over 500 visitors and I took part in this interview promoting this exhibition for BBC News
