Abstract

Examines the strategies of ulama, hakims (Muslim doctors), literati, and the wielders of political power in fashioning and re-fashioning their authority both under colonial and post-colonial rule. in general we see Mughal/persianate sources of authority replaced by those derived from Arab and Western sources.
