Abstract

This entry provides a short biography of Ernest Renan, a French philologist and historian, paying special attention to his ideas about race and nation. It outlines the evolution of his ideas on Aryan and Semitic “races,” and discusses the debate they have provoked. It situates his ideas about nationalism in the political context of the time and then summarizes the legacy of his ideas in subsequent scholarship on nationalism.
