Abstract
Despite the abundance of molecular data, including the existence of many hundreds of potentials protein biomarkers, assessing cellular and histopathological appearance of the tumour remains the main tool for classification of breast cancers. Recently devised molecular classification system considers both receptor status and grade of the tumours, it aids the prognosis and helps in identifying the most suitable therapies. However, despite years of research no suitable molecular tests were developed for the early non-invasive diagnostics of the disease.
We have analysed biological availability and proteolysis stability of the breast cancer associated proteome and selected a subset of 51 subtype specific biomarkers and 39 other disease associated proteins. We have devised a number of affinity assay formats including lateral flow, micro-well plate and microarray-based formats. Our aim is to develop affinity based tests suitable for the point-of-care applications for the early detection, stratification and monitoring of breast cancer.
