title = "News from France: Burney's Bias and Gr{\'e}try's Popularity",
abstract = "The searchable database of the eighteenth-century Burney Collection Newspapers provides important information about musical life in Britain; this article focuses on discoveries (1) of a letter from Paris published in the London 'Morning Chronicle' of 26 May 1773, severely critical of Burney's coverage of Paris musical life portrayed in his 'Present State of Music in France and Italy'; and (2) of numerous reports about Gr{\'e}try's life, works and publications. These illuminate the productions seen in London of 'Z{\'e}mire et Azor' and 'Richard Coeur de lion', and bear witness to lively British interest in non-Italian opera. ",
