Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) policies and strategies at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The integration of AI into military operations holds implications across tactical, operational and strategic decision-making. The authors discuss the role of NATO as a facilitator for consensus-building and common approaches among Allied nations according to two main pillars: how the Alliance may seek to access, develop, adopt, and integrate AI into national armed forces and into NATO’s common activities; and how the Alliance may seek to address the demand for principles of responsible state behaviour with respect to AI.
