Abstract
Motherboard explores my own lived experience of solo motherhood and breast cancer. Filmed over 20 years it charts the trials, traumas and occasional triumphs of raising my son Jim alone. It’s shot on five generations of smartphones, from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 15. I’ve recorded hundreds of hours of footage, capturing each twist and turn in Jim’s life, from the thumbs- up he gave me during my first scan, to his first day at college.
Motherboard is a complex, personal and unsentimental portrait of a mother-son relationship from birth to adulthood, exploring the ways in which myself and my son , navigate two generations of absent fathers and my breast cancer diagnosis in 2018. Motherboard explores the diversity of contemporary family life, teenage mental health and recovery and the impact of chronic illness and breast cancer on family life.
