Abstract

The first in-depth study of German boxer and national hero, Max Schmelling (1905-2005). Assesses a wide range of evidence drawn from contemporary print and broadcast media, prose fiction and poetry, film, life writing, the visual arts and museums and heritage. Examines Schmeling’s emergence as an icon in the Weimar Republic, his association with America, his celebrity status in the Third Reich, and his rivalry with Joe Louis as a focus for an extraordinary propaganda and ideological contest.
