Abstract
Outlines the history of literature (including novels, short stories, and memoirs) by African authors in English which are about, or contain significant depictions of non-normative sexuality or gender variance in Africa south of the Sahara. Provides a brief critical assessment of the novels’ contributions to the development of African identities. Forwards both original readings of the texts under discussion and provides a new theoretical framework.
