'Les Nymphes de Diane' in the Study of opéra-comique

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Favart's 'Les Nymphes de Diane' was prevented by a 'Commis de la Police' in 1741 from being premiered in Paris. Its first performance took place in Brussels (1748), followed by an untypically complete edition of its music. This completeness permits new conclusions regarding vocal performance practices, and the orchestral presence of horns. The work held the Paris stage between 1753 and 1782. Its source poem was La Fontaine's Tale, 'Les Lunettes', whose classical setting allegorically becomes a stylish critique of the practice in France of allowing girls as young as sixteen to take the veil.
