Abstract
A foundational article by Harold Powers is entitled '"La solita forma" and "the uses of convention"' (Acta musicologica 59/1, 1987), and provides here the method of examining the way that Berlioz adapted Italian conventions in many different ways in 'Les Troyens'. The degree of consciousness with which these procedures may have been adopted is the concern of the first part of this article, which considers Berlioz's knowledge of some of Verdi's works, and the experience of failure that Berlioz had encountered in Paris and London with 'Benvenuto Cellini'.
