Is the trans-exclusionary debate about public toilets really about public toilets?

This paper examines why public toilets have become a central battleground in Britain's contemporary ‘gender wars’. Rather than a genuine safety concern, the paper argues that the anti-trans bathroom panic operates affectively rather than empirically, and that public toilets function as technologies of classification rather than neutral infrastructure. Drawing on Derrida's impossible monolingualism, this paper than attempts a parallel between the purity of language sought in translation and the demand for gender purity imposed on bodies within sex segregated spaces and contends that the trans-exclusionary debate about public toilets is not really about public toilets, but rather about the anxious maintenance of a fantasy that will never become real.
