Abstract

The Late Pliocene to Quaternary continental sediments of the central
sector of the Guadix Basin (southern Spain) show a ca. 100 ka cyclic pattern
consisting of alternating alluvial fan and fluvial-lacustrine deposits. During
Pliocene and Pleistocene, the Guadix Basin was endoreic and was characterized
by the existence of an axial fluvial valley and a marginal border of
transverse alluvial fans. Both systems were laterally related, occupying alternatively
the axial valley in the central sector of the Guadix Basin. The estimated
age for the alternation, ca. 100 ka, falls into the band of Milankovitch
high-frequency eccentricity. These phases could be interpreted to
be the result of eccentricity maxima (longer and cooler winter periods, higher
precipitation value) or of eccentricity minima (drier and colder periods, lower
vegetation cover in source areas and higher sediment supply with ephemeral
precipitations). The paleomagnetic data are not accurate enough to provide
a good correlation with one or the other.
