Abstract

Five areas of research concerning Grétry are discussed, which each depend on new forms of technology or new disciplinary evaluations, and each give rise to specific case-studies: (1) digitised newspapers, specifically the Burney Collection Newspapers (the recognition of Grétry's importance for London); (2) music as a focus for historians of culture and society (the meaning of Grétry's music both during and after his own lifetime); (3) newly edited documents (the significance of Grétry's historicising use of local colour for Berlioz); (4) newly compiled bibliographical sweeps of past literature ('lost' articles from 1925 and 1930, the second dealing with Grétry's reception in Poland); (5) recent opera recordings, whose availability may become a major tool in re-evaluation ('Céphale et Procris', conducted by Guy Van Waas).
