Abstract
Geopolitics is a term encompassing a diversity of thought and practice that extends far beyond the academy. From its initial
preoccupation with imperialist struggles closely linked to the survival of states and empires, geopolitics continues to attract
attention in the policy realm with the unfolding of great power rivalries and global hegemonic agendas. The infusion of
‘critical’ perspectives into the study of geopolitics has challenged the existence of objective scriptings of political space,
highlighting geopolitics as a power-laden pursuit instead. As critical geopolitics diverge into ‘newer’ interests such as
investigations of affect/emotions and assemblage thinking, there remains the need to be vigilant of the geostrategic
knowledges that are invoked in the service of warfare and their multifarious impacts on society and its people.
