Abstract
This paper examines the contribution of Pope Eugenius to the preaching and organisation of the Second Crusade. Previous historians have written him off as ineffectual and give Saint Bernard of Clairvaux the main role in this event. This paper demonstrates that Eugenius and the circle he assembled around him were decisive in the launch and recruitment effort connected with the crusade and his ideas proved influential for decades to come.
