Enhancing Formula Racing Circuits for Future Success: A Comprehensive Examination of Formula Racing Supply Chains for Sustainability

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Formula One (F1) as a global motorsport phenomenon, entails intricate logistical operations to orchestrate races across the globe. Teams bear significant costs for various elements, including research, development, manufacturing, testing, logistics, travel, and personnel. The expansion of the F1 racing calendar in recent years has posed challenges for efficient transportation of personnel and cargo between events.
This paper scrutinizes the supply chains underpinning F1 to uncover opportunities for calendar optimization and cost reduction. It encompasses analyses of F1 operations, event logistics, supply chain management, and race calendar optimization. Quantitative data collection methods are employed to gather information on team budgets, freight costs, and travel distances from academic journals and official Formula 1 and DHL publications, the latter being the official logistics partner of F1. Findings expose inefficiencies in the current calendar, including back-to-back races on different continents and suboptimal event sequencing. This study contributes to the understanding of large-scale sporting event supply chains and showcases techniques for enhancing efficiency.
