Culture and ethnocentric staffing in Indian multinational corporations in the IT Service Sector in the United Kingdom

Abstract

This paper examines the tendency of emerging market MNCs to resort to ethnocentric staffing policy when operating in advanced economy. It looks at Indian IT sector companies operating in the UK. This paper argues that culture is a critical factor which prevents Indian IT MNCs from hiring local employees in their UK subsidiaries. This article divides culture into three broad types of national culture, organisational culture and the IT culture. A major part of the latter half of this paper delves deeper into the concept of ‘IT culture’ and its role in international staffing of Indian IT sector MNCs in the UK. This article provides examples of Indian IT culture that make Indian IT sector MNCs unique.
