Abstract
The essay begins with references to Liverpool in Conrad's fiction - from the description of the Mersey at the start of Lord Jim, through the crew of 'Liverpool hard cases' in the Judea (in 'Youth'), to Captain Anthony's affiliations with the city in Chance. The second section then considers Conrad's brief visit to Liverpool in 1916 and his longer stay (for a month) in December 1919. The final section addresses Liverpool's links with West Africa and the pieces donated to the Liverpool Museum by various named individuals from Sierra Leone via a Liverpool ship's engineer.
