Abstract
This chapter traces the Nazi attempt during the 1930s to diminish the power and influence of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), which became a proscribed organisation in Germany and was lambasted by the regime for being ideologically suspect and dominated by Jews, Communists and proponents of modernism. After officially withdrawing from the ISCM only months after they came to power, the Nazis established a rival international organisation under the leadership of Richard Strauss that promoted Aryan and völkisch repertoire with the ultimate aim of creating a 'New Order' of European culture. along Nazi and fascist lines.
