Abstract

This paper presents a test model for investigating howto coordinate a power grid and energy storage systems (ESSs) bywide-area monitoring (WAM). It consists of three parts: first, amodel of a power grid containing different types of generators, loads, and transmission network; second, a model of lithium-ionbattery ESSs; and third, a model of multivariate statistical analysisbased WAM built to capture the grid information for guiding theoperation of ESSs. Simulation studies using a reduced equivalentmodel specifically built for a UK power grid enhanced with lithium-ion battery ESSs and WAM illustrate the way in which WAM cancoordinate a power grid and ESSs, and also demonstrate the benefitof ESSs on a power grid.
