Abstract

The article discusses Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus' (1391-1425) views on the study of theology and the relations between Church and State in the light of his writings, focusing on the hitherto unpublished epistolary discourse addressed to his oikeios Alexios Iagoup. This lengthy discourse, preserved in two fifteenth-century manuscripts (Parisinus graecus 3041 and Barberinianus graecus 219) was composed by Manuel in response to accusations levelled against him by a person which he does not name (in reality the Latinophrone teacher and theologian Manuel Calecas), on the grounds that the Emperor should not involve himself in theological discussions.
