Project: Research

Project Details

This SSHRC Insight Development Grant will enable a team of First Nations and non-Indigenous scholars led by Dylan Robinson and Keavy Martin to attend national events held by Canada's Truth and Reconciliaion Commission (TRC). The goal of this research is to examine the benefits and limitations of the arts in fostering the TRC’s mandate to acknowledge and promote public awareness of the experiences, impacts and consequences of the Indian Residential Schools. Recognizing the centrality of cultural traditions as historical record, Canada’s TRC is the first to provide residential school survivors a means by which to submit artistic responses of their experiences in written, and audio/visual digital formats. The inclusion of artistic statements here gives rise to questions of how trauma and survivors’ experiences ‘beyond words’ are mediated through aesthetic form.
