Social Science Impact Accelerator: Analysing Public Policy with a Gendered Lens -- A New Approach for the United States

Project Details

Description

The United States is among the few advanced democracies to lack a ‘gender mainstreaming’ mandate. These mandates require policymakers to design policies that promote equity among diverse groups of women and men. For instance, a gender mainstreaming analysis of countries’ COVID-19 recovery plans revealed that infrastructure investment largely benefits men, as the construction industry primarily employs men. This conclusion led many countries to also boost funding to sectors that primarily employ women.

Founded in 2021, the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI) is the US’s first think tank dedicated to gender mainstreaming. GEPI’s bold vision is to secure a federal gender mainstreaming mandate. This project shapes GEPI’s federal lobbying strategy. Professor Piscopo will lead training sessions for GEPI staff on international best practices; coauthor an advocacy brief to be circulated among federal lawmakers; and co-steer an international expert group that will promote gender mainstreaming in the US.
