Description
‘Words from the Wild: The Nature of Poetry’ (17th January – 24th March, Davison Building Exhibition Space) is an exhibition of visual eco-poetry. The space has been curated to expand on what the viewer might think of as a poem, featuring scultures, textile banners, film and sound pieces, visual prints, and large-scale installations. Teaching groups such as EN2219: Environmental Literatures, EN1112: Introduction to English Poetry, EN1105: Literature and Crisis, and EN5116: Reading as a Writer are set to use the space as a teaching resource throughout its duration.
The premise for this teaching and learning project is simple: students will be returning to the overlooked question of ‘how to read?’ The majority of texts collected in the exhibition cannot be read from left-to-right, or by turning the page – in order to access the texts, the exhibition requires viewers to playfully develop and employ alternate reading strategies, find new ways to navigate language, closely observe small excerpts of text, and often rely on sensory and visual information. Viewers are invited to revise, and in some cases completely redefine what the act of reading means to them.
Whilst the exhibition pushes viewers to think through the extremes of what reading might look like, such experimental approaches can be adopted and employed when facing visually conservative poetry, and in some cases theory. Students struggling with reading or engaging with a text will be able to lean on these approaches as a new or alternate ‘way in’ to the literature to support traditional reading routes
