Project Details
Layman's description
Between June and August 2021, I curated a blog-based public history project chertseywm100.com in partnership with Chertsey Museum to commemorate the centenary of the Chertsey Town War Memorial. This involved creating a series of blogposts about some of the men and women of Chertsey who were impacted by the First World War.
Amongst those featured were a wounded soldier who survived the War after being interned in a Swiss alpine resort and whose son I interviewed for the project, a mother who lost two of her sons within five days at the Battle of the Aisne, and a conscientious objector who served briefly in an ambulance unit and later took his own life.
The project was supervised by Dr Edward Madigan and contributed towards my MA in Public History at Royal Holloway University of London which was awarded with distinction. Although submitted to the University for assessment on 31 August 2021, the public engagement part of the project continued until a event to mark the centenary of the memorial’s unveiling on 30 October 2021.
