Personal profile

Personal profile

I am a first-year Techne-funded PhD student in the department of Geography at Royal Holloway University of London. My research revolves around the cultural geographies of fireworks, air/atmosphere, and the elemental. I am supervised by Dr. Sasha Engelmann and Prof. Peter Adey.

My PhD project aims to delve into Chinese people's embodied, poetic, and aesthetic experiences of fireworks and fiery rituals, and the potential geopolitics of fireworks production and regulation in the context of contemporary China. My research will be based on the case study of the Chaoshan area in China by using archival analysis, ethnography, in-depth interviews, and creative methods (photography, painting, etc). In a broader context, the project is expected to intepret fireworks' materialities and affectivities within the Chinese elemental philosophy framework, and contribute to the decolonisation process of Western cultural geographies.
