Tom's ESRC funded PhD (University of Nottingham) investigated the development of new strategies and innovations in the financial services sector. Tom then worked at the University of Nottingham on projects that examined wholesale-retail bank linkages and wealth management. 

He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University, where he worked on consultancy projects for Barclays Bank and other stakeholders including the EU. Tom then worked as Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Director of the Centre for Innovation and Enterprise at the University of Southampton.

While at Royal Holloway, Tom held the roles of Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Management, Economics and Law, Director for Teaching and Learning, and Director of Education Strategy in the School of Business and Management. 

Tom’s research has been featured in the media and presented to both policy-makers and practitioners. He has also peer-reviewed papers for international journals, including: Journal of Economic Geography, Journal of Small Business Management, Environment and Planning A, Regional Studies, European Management Review, Urban Studies, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development and the International Small Business Journal.

He is also a Research Fellow and accredited Trainer at the Open Data Institute. 

Tom currently serves on the steering commitee of the Real Estate Data (RED) Foundation and chairs its academia research group.

He welcomes applications from potential doctoral students on the topics of SMEs, entrepreneurship, innovation, financialization, financial services and digital business
