Tess Pinto

I am an AHRC funded PhD student based at Royal Holloway. My work focuses on the intersection of politics, urban landscapes and attitudes towards the past.

My current research is supervised by Professor David Gilbert, and explores the conservation and planning cultures of the Greater London Council, spanning the council's establishment in the 1960s until its dissolution by Thatcher in the mid-1980s. I am interested in the GLC's role as a crucial agent in London's changing urban landscape during a transformative period in post-war politics, and the ways in which the shifting political composition of the council influenced relationships with both the growing conservation movement and local community groups.

I joined the department having worked for several years as a senior conservation adviser at the Twentieth Century Society, and had previously undertaken an MA in Architectural History at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
