Dr Steve Alty is the Head of Department of Electronic Engineering. His research contribution has been in the area of signal processing and machine learning with applications in biomedicine. His other research interests include advancing engineering education through technology enhanced learning and open hardware projects.

Teaching

Steve was Undergraduate Education Lead for the Department from its inception in 2017 until 2022 whereupon he became Head of Department. He obtained his PG Cert in Academic Practice from King's College London in 2004 and in 2016 became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Over the course of his career he has worked at four different HEIs including Liverpool John Moores University, King's College London, and London South Bank University. He has been nominated for and received numerous prizes for his teaching. Part of his pedagogical work was published in “Creativity First, Science Follows: Lessons in Digital Signal Processing Education”, in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. He currently teaches on the following courses:
