My research focuses on the representation of congenital deformity in nineteenth-century literature, exploring why and how the "deformed" body became a locus for interrogating and destabilising contemporary ideas about human origin and identity in the nineteenth century. By reading narratives of deformity alongside contemporary scientific literature, my work contextualises the importance of the deformed body within the broader nineteenth-century cultural imagination. Works examined include those by Byron, Hoffmann, Dickens, Hugo, Collins, Craik and Malet among others.
