Personal profile
My research addresses the psychological mechanisms of human attention, awareness and experience in multisensory contexts.
As Head of Audience Futures for the CoSTAR National Lab, I lead large-scale interdisciplinary studies of user experience and engagement across a wide variety of technologies. I am also Co-Director of the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Digital Media Inclusion.
Within the Department of Psychology, I run the Attention Lab where we study a range of topics, including: attentional capture; the relationship between attention and awareness; and the way that attention acts within and between the sensory modalities of vision, hearing and touch. We study these topics both from a theoretical perspective and also in more applied contexts, such as piloting aircraft, operating vehicles remotely or interacting with immersive technologies such as VR.
Our work has been featured by a range of TV and radio stations (including BBC Breakfast TV, Sky News, and BBC Radio 5Live) as well as print media (including The Times and The Guardian in the UK and MSNBC in the US).
