Personal profile

Research interests

My research explores the psychological impact of domestic abuse, with a particular focus on coercive control. I am interested in how coercive control shapes parenting experiences, affects children and sibling relationships, and continues to influence families through post-separation abuse. A further strand of my research examines how mental health professionals understand, identify, and respond to coercive control, including the development of competence frameworks and training resources.

My earlier work focused on cognitive and behavioural processes in psychosis, anxiety, and perinatal mental health, including the role of responsibility beliefs in psychotic symptoms and the impact of postpartum psychosis on the mother–infant relationship. This grounding in psychological processes continues to inform my current approach to understanding coercive control and its consequences.

Teaching

I have extensive teaching experience across Doctorate and Masters level Clinical Psychology programmes, delivering teaching within several core thematic areas. Clinical skills and therapeutic practice include CBT for depression, CBT for phobias, and OCD, with a strong emphasis on applied, evidence based interventions. Assessment, formulation, and critical thinking form a central part of my teaching, supporting trainees to develop psychologically informed, integrative and reflective clinical reasoning. I also teach ethics, leadership, and professional practice, focusing on values based decision making, professional identity, and responsible clinical leadership. In addition, my teaching addresses diversity, culture, and social context, including whiteness in clinical psychology and racial trauma, encouraging critical reflection on power, systemic influences, and culturally attuned practice.

Affiliations

I have a strong commitment to advancing the position, visibility, and influence of clinical psychology through active contribution to a range of British Psychological Society (BPS) committees and professional initiatives. My work has included organising national conferences and networking events that promote professional development and collaboration across the field. I have served as CPD Lead for the London Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) BPS committee, supporting the development of high quality learning opportunities for practitioners. Within the BPS PPH subcommittee, I have played an influential role in shaping practice guidelines for placements in public and community psychology, contributing to the development of innovative and socially responsive training pathways. I am also part of the Task and Finish Group within the Leadership and Management subcommittee, which is redesigning the leadership competence framework for the psychological professions, alongside broader activities aimed at strengthening professional leadership, standards, and impact.

Consultancy

My consultancy work includes collaboration with the DASH Charity, supporting initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for victims and survivors of domestic abuse. This has involved contributing psychological expertise to help enhance organisational impact, evaluating training programmes for healthcare professionals, and supporting the development of evidence informed practice. I have also contributed to strengthening partnership working and the dissemination of research and best practice through conferences, professional events, and cross sector collaboration.
