I am a Palaeoecology Technican within the Deparment of Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London. I have previously held Research Technician and PDRA roles at the University of Cambridge and the University of Exeter. I am currently a Honorary Associate Research Fellow with the University of Exeter.
I completed my PhD, funded by the AHRC SWW DTP, in 2022. This focused on land-use practices in the Peruvian Andes during the Late Holocene. Since carrying out my PhD, my research focus has shifted to understanding the development of peatland ecosystems and the role they play in providing services for local communitites.
I am now applying my passion for Quaternary Science and palaeoecology within my role as a Palaeoecology Technican. I support both undergraduate and postgraduate level teaching as well as training PhD students in laboratory procedures associated with Palaeoecology (pollen, phytoliths, charcoal, and plant macrofossils).
My expertise lies in palaeoecology (pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal and phytoliths) and peatland ecosystems. My research addresses the dynamics of past human-environmental interactions, especially in relation to changes in land-use practices related to agriculture, and how this information may inform future land-use management. A further element of my research focuses on peatland ecosystems and the role they play in providing ecosystem services to local communities, with an aim to ensure the conservation of these ecosystems under future environmental change.
I am the Palaeoecology Laboratory Manager for PalaeoLab Consultancy, a specialist palaeoenvironmental consultancy providing a comprehensive range of laboratory and analytical services to investigate past environments, climates, and ecological change. Within the consultancy, I deliver services in the processing and analysis of phytoliths, pollen, charcoal, plant macrofossils, and diatoms.
I have experience working for consultancy services at the interface of the acedemic, commercial archaeology, and cultural heritage sectors. Over the last three years, I have provided specialist phytolith consult alongside other work for archaeological services and during my PhD I worked for a consultancy providing technical laboratory support for geoarchaeological analysis.
