José-Rodrigo is senior lecturer (associate professor) in technology and information management at the school of business and management of Royal Holloway. 

 

His main area of reserach is applied systems thinking.  José-Rodrigo has over twenty (20) years of research and practice experience in this area, covering themes like information systems and technology planning, electronic government evaluation, creativity and sustainability education.  He has published numerous articles and monographs in these areas.  

 

During his academic career, José-Rodrigo has been awarded an ESRC post-doctoral research fellowship for his work on systems thinking and information systems; he has been nominated to best paper based on a dissertation at the Academy of Management (William Newman Award); he has obtained several internal and external grants for research projects like: 

 

  • Ethics and laws of algorithms (project ELA, involving engineering, law and management)
  • Digital memories of marginalised communities in Colombia (law, computer science and management)
  • The use of creative fiction to identify threats and vulnerabilities of technology devices (Fivu project, involving software engineering at Lancaster University and Imperial College, information security at University of Dundee, and management at Royal Holloway)
  • Exploring behaviours around food waste and recycling at a university campus (Somebody's food project, involving anaerobic digestion company Leap Micro AD, engineering at University of West London, engineering at University of Hull, management at Manchester Metropolitan University, management at Royal Holloway, independent consultancy on food)

 

José-Rodrigo has a computer science and systems engineering degree from Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, his native country.  He worked as a software programmer, business analyst and strategic planner for a number of years before being awarded a Colfuturo scholarship to do his MA in Management Systems (Systems Thinking) at Hull University's Centre for Systems Studies in the UK.  After, José-Rodrigo was awarded a scholarship to do his PhD.  He obtained a lecturership at Hull's Business School (EQUIS accredited) before moving to Royal Holloway (AACSB accredited).   

 

At Royal Holloway, José-Rodrigo has contributed to develop a strong research and engagement portfolio in digital innovation and management.  He was director of the MSc in Business Information Systems (now Digital Business), undergraduate lead for the digital innovation and management department and course leader for courses of quantitative methods and creative process management.  Both courses have been awarded teaching commendations for innovations in assessment and involvement of industry.  The latter course has been internationalised and taught at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Aerospace (NUAA, China, 2022) and University of Los Andes (Colombia, 2023).  

 

To date, José-Rodrigo has supervised to completion four (4) PhD students in the areas of organisational communication, electronic government, online distance education and crowdsourcing platforms.  He has also supervised many Msc dissertations.  

 

José-Rodrigo currently serves as application area editor (social responsibility) of the journal Systems Research and Behavioural Science.
