John Hagedoorn received an M.Sc. in economic sociology and political economics from the University of Leiden (cum laude) and a PhD. in industrial organization from Maastricht University. He is currently professor of Strategy and International Business at the School of Management, Royal Holloway University of London and a profesorial fellow with UNU-MERIT at Maastricht University.

He has held visiting scholar and visiting professor positions at a number of universities: University of Sussex (SPRU), Stanford University, The George Washington University, University of California at Berkeley (Haas), University of Paris, and the National University of Singapore.

His research is published in a wide variety of journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, British Journal of Management, Business History, Business History Review, Industrial and Corporate Change, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Common Market Studies, Managerial and Decision Economics, Organization Studies, Research Policy, Review of Industrial Organization, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, Technovation, and World Development.
