Personal profile
I am a first-year ESRC South East Doctoral arc (SEDarc) funded PhD student in the Department of Geography in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. My project titled 'Rethinking the Relationship between the UK and the Overseas Territories: Kew, Science Diplomacy, and Soft Power' is the first interdisciplinary project based on Kew’s historical and current activities in the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs) and I am supervised by Professor Felix Driver, Dr Alasdair Pinkerton MP and Thomas Heller.
Drawing upon archives, collections, and interviews with current and former Kew colleagues and partners within the OTs, the project will seek to produce a detailed historical account of Kew’s role in fostering scientific, heritage-related connections between the UK and the Overseas Territories up to the present day, before exploring how these have expressed themselves through Kew’s organisational structures, collections and curatorial practices. The PhD then aims to explore and develop new sets of relationships between Kew and the UKOTs in ways that are relevant to the present and future needs and generations of the OTs, and in ways that will also advance Kew’s scientific strategies.
