Helen Littleboy teaches documentary filmmaking at both undergraduate and masters level.  Helen is an award-winning television producer and director with over 20 years experience.  She brings excellent current industry connections, combining her post here in the Media Arts department with her role as executive producer working with some of the UK's most highly regarded production companies.

 

Helen was executive producer for the Grierson award nominated BBC series Hospital (2017) which drew acclaim for unprecdented access which revealed the extent of the crisis in the NHS, and also for the award-winning comedy fixed rig series The Hotel (Channel 4, 2015). Helen has a particular interest in nurturing emerging talent, with acclaimed documentaries for Channel 4’s Cutting Edge series and ten films for the First Cut strand for new directors, both for Channel 4.  Building upon Royal Holloway’s excellent industry links, Helen is committed to using this experience to enhance student’s employability, supporting their search for work and funding after university.

 

As a producer and director Helen's innovative and impactful documentaries take in social history, such as the acclaimed BBC series The Battle for Brixton (2006) commemorating 20 years since the iconic riot (“ a powerful, striking and memorable film” Evening Standard; “excellent and revealing documentary” The Telegraph), as well as popular documentaries like Grierson award nominated The Truth About Gay Animals. She has developed, produced and directed more than 50 hours of television including the ground-breaking series about the English, White Tribe (“White Tribe tells you all you need to know about this moment of flux” The Guardian; “Powerful, cogent” The Independent ) described by Channel 4 as “remit-defining” and included in a BFI DVD collection distributed to every school in the UK.
