I am the author of Italian Orientalism: Nationhood, Cosmopolitanism and the Cultural Politics of Identity (2019), and have published on Italian and British colonial cultures and racial ideologies. I have also written on contemporary Italian and transilingual fiction, and am the co-editor of the special issue Colonial and Postcolonial Italy (2006) and the volume of essays Beyond Catholicism: Heresy, Mysticism and Apocalypse in Italian Culture (2014)

I would be interested in supervising postgraduate projects in any of these areas (current and former Master by Research and PhD projects include: Mediterranean migration in Italian and French culture; madness and colonialism in African literature; representations of slavery in Caribbean literature; history education in fascist Italy; postcolonial memory in Italy and Libya; the myth of the anti-fascist resistance in Italian and French culture)

Personal profile

My interdisciplinary research informs my teaching in Italian literature and visual cultures, translation (Italian into English), as well as translingual literature, and comparative Black and African literatures, on degree programmes in Italian Studies, Comparative Literature and Culture, Translation Studies and Liberal Arts.
