Research interests
Dan Stone is Professor of Modern History and Director of the Holocaust Research Institute at RHUL. He is a historian of ideas who works primarily on twentieth-century European history. His research interests include: the history and interpretation of the Holocaust, genocide studies, history of anthropology, history of fascism, the cultural history of the British Right and theory of history. He is the author or editor of twenty-five books and over 100 scholarly articles. Dan Stone was co-editor of Patterns of Prejudice and the Journal of Genocide Research and is now on the editorial boards of those two journals as well as Critical Philosophy of Race, The Journal of Holocaust Research, and History of Communism in Europe. His most recent publications include: Goodbye to All That? The Story of Europe since 1945 (Oxford University Press, 2014); The Liberation of the Camps: The End of the Holocaust and its Aftermath (Yale University Press, 2015); Concentration Camps: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2019); Fascism, Nazism and the Holocaust: Challenging Histories (Routledge, 2021); The Holocaust: An Unfinished History (Penguin, 2023); Fate Unknown: Tracing the Missing after World War II and the Holocaust (Oxford University Press, 2023); and Psychoanalysis, Historiography and the Nazi Camps: Accounting for Survival (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). Dan has recently co-edited volume 1 of the Cambridge History of the Holocaust (CUP, 2025) and Britain and Holocaust Consciousness in the 1960s (Bloomsbury, forthcoming 2026). He chaired the academic advisory board for the Imperial War Museum's Holocaust Galleries redesign, which opened in October 2021, and is a member of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust's Experts Reference Group, the UK Oversight Committee for the International Tracing Service Archive, and the UK government's Advisory Group on Spoliation Matters. He is currently writing a book on the Holocaust in Romania, which will be published by Allen Lane/Penguin in early 2027.
